Pratt & Whitney Engineering & Technology Center Achieves LEED® Gold Certification

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., June 5, 2018 – The Engineering & Technology Center, the newest building on Pratt & Whitney’s East Hartford campus, is now certified as LEED Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the world’s most recognized green-building rating system. It was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to evaluate the environmental and human health performance of a building. United Technologies was a founding member of the USGBC.

A building to house our engineering activities has to be state-of-the-art, and that includes environmental sustainability.

The Engineering & Technology Center becomes the 11th Pratt & Whitney building to receive LEED certification.

Sustainable features of the Engineering & Technology Center include:

• Reduced energy use. The overall energy performance for the Engineering & Technology Center is 39 percent better than current building standards. Floor-to-ceiling windows maximize natural light. With daylight harvesting, the lights closest to windows dim in response to natural light. High-efficiency LED lights were used throughout the building.
• Water efficiency. Low-flow faucets and fixtures throughout the building can reduce water consumption by 40 percent. Water bottle refill stations encourage use of reusable bottles. The air conditioning system captures and reuses condensation during humid months to reduce water consumption by an estimated 1 million gallons annually. Using native plants and grasses in landscaping decreased water usage by 50 percent compared to alternatives.
• Indoor environmental quality. Increased ventilation and low-emitting materials were used to improve the air quality for employees.
• Alternative transportation. Bike racks at the building hold approximately 100 bicycles or enough for one out of every 17 employees inside to commute by bike. The parking lot also has six designated spaces for electric vehicles to park and recharge, with the ability to expand.
• Sustainable construction. The Engineering & Technology Center’s certification also recognizes waste diverted from landfills during the construction process, use of recycled materials in construction and the reuse of asphalt and concrete for roads and parking lots.
