The Metallurgy team enables the design, fabrication and operation of metallic components in harsh thermal and stress environments, with a focus on lighter, stronger, high-temperature-capable, corrosion-resistant, multi-functional structures. We do this through the identification, characterization and development of production-level controls for new, emerging and commercially available metallic materials. We also develop and apply modeling methods in the areas of alloy design, characterization, process development and post-processing.
Focus areas
- Additively manufactured materials, including commercial and novel aluminum alloys, titanium and superalloy materials
- Emerging conventional materials and processes, such as characterization of new stainless-steel materials for wear applications
- Structural repairs and heat treatment optimization efforts for use in MRO and fleet maintenance operations
